The United States Coast Guard celebrated its 228th birthday on August 4. The Coast Guard is one of the armed forces in America, which was founded on August 4, 1790. On this day, Congress authorized the construction of 10 vessels, which were designed to enforce tariffs, prevent theft, and protect federal revenue. It was the job of the Coast Guard (which didn’t actually receive this name until 1915) to handle these tasks. Since 1790, the Coast Guard gained additional duties, such as aiding mariners in destress and tending to humanitarian needs.

The Goodwill Benefit, Resources, and Veterans Education program, also known as BRAVE, launched in 2016. Thanks to a partnership with the Women’s Resource Center of Manatee and Sarasota (WRC), the organization was able to provide free mental health care to local veterans one day a week. Now, with funding provided by SRQ VETS, The Goodwill BRAVE program is available to veterans on a daily basis.
