August 4, 1790, is the birthday of the U.S. Coast Guard. In 1790, Alexander Hamilton, the first Secretary of the Treasury, founded the Revenue Marine, which is known as the U.S. Coast Guard today. The U.S. Coast Guard keeps the United States waterways safe. They play a significant role in national security. They are a part of the International Ice Patrol.

Included in the U.S. Coast Guard is a team of rescue swimmers. The qualifications for rescue swimmers are so high that only 50 percent of applications are accepted every year. The U.S. Coast Guard is the oldest continuing seagoing service in the United States. It is celebrating its 230th birthday in 2020. Compared to other naval forces around the world, the U.S. Coast Guard is the 12th largest.
