Using Horses to Fight Against PTSD and Veteran Suicide

There are many mental health therapies available for veterans suffering from PTSD and other issues, but a lot of them are not totally effective. The Veterans Administration estimates that somewhere between 10-20 percent of veterans returning from active duty will suffer PTSD. It is also estimated that about 20 veterans are committing suicide each day due to their mental health issues. Operation Rubix is determined to give veterans in the greater Sarasota Florida area access to a network of mental and physical health support for them and their families who also suffer from the effects of mental trauma.

One therapy that has shown great promise is equine therapy or working with horses. Programs are underway across the country to give veterans with mental health issues access to horses. This may include riding them, but benefits have been seen from the routine of taking daily care of horses. Equine-based therapy has seen success with other types of mental health conditions, but now a study is underway Columbia University Irving Medical Center and other facilities using clinical research study methods to confirm the usefulness of equine therapy to treat veteran PTSD and those at risk for suicide.

Operation Rubix operates out of Sarasota, Florida and provides guidance to help veterans and their families find both mental health and mental healing programs. We are developing a constantly growing network of providers who can support veterans with programs either covered by VA benefits or at a reduced cost.
